What is inhibited sexual desire?

Inhibited desire, or loss of libido, refers to a decrease in desire for, or interest in sexual activity. Reduced libido can result from physical or psychological factors. It has been associated with low levels of the hormone testosterone. The low T may also result in Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (MHSDD) disorder.

It also may be caused by psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression; medical illnesses, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, certain medications, including some antidepressants, and relationship difficulties.

Who is affected by sexual problems?

Both men and women are affected by sexual problems. Sexual problems occur in adults of all ages. Among those commonly affected are those in the geriatric population, which may be related to a decline in health associated with aging.

How do sexual problems affect men?

The most common sexual problems in men are ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunction, and inhibited sexual desire.

How are male sexual problems diagnosed?

To diagnose a man’s sexual problem, the doctor likely will begin with a thorough history of symptoms and a physical exam. They may order other tests to rule out any medical problems that may be contributing to the dysfunction. The doctor may refer you to other health professionals, including a urologist (a doctor specializing in the urinary tract and male reproductive system), a sex therapist, and other counselors.

Diagnosing Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

The illness has outlined the following criteria, which must be met in order for a male hypoactive sexual desire disorder to be diagnosed:

  • The individual experiences marked low sexual desire for at least 75% of the time over 6 months or more.
  • He reports an obvious delay, infrequency, or lack of orgasm during sexual activity for 6 months or longer.
  • He experiences clinically significant distress due to these issues.
  • The issue is not better explained by another mental illness or medical condition

Treatment for MHSDD

There are a few treatment options for those who suffer from male hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Effectively treating this disorder rely heavily on removing or targeting the underlying issue.

For example, if the disorder has emerged due to relationship problems, relationship counseling will prove most effective. The following are other successful treatment methods, again depending on the root of the problem:

  • Psychotherapy can help change behavior patterns.
  • Hormonal replacement therapy or hormonal treatments can consist of creams, patches, and pills.
  • A change in medication, such as a reduction in dosage.
  • Mindfulness teaches the individual to always focus on what is happening right now.
  • Antidepressant drugs, if the individual has depression or anxiety.
